Testosterone is the primary androgenic hormone. Testosterone and its 5α-reduced metabolite dihydrotestosterone (DHT) activate the intracellular androgen receptor and modulate gene transcription. Testosterone is produced by the interstitial (Leydig) cells of the testes and the adrenal glands in males and by the ovary and adrenal glands in females.
