There are upcoming tests that will determine if male sex hormones, such as testosterone, will prevent breast cancer from growing. This new study is going to evaluate how testosterone pay help fight against the cancer cells. Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women, evaluating how the male sex hormones contribute to breast cancer may find new ways of treating the cancer.

The University of Colorado research team will be the team that take on this clinical study. They found that “many cases of breast cancers have androgen receptors that allow these male sex hormones to promote growth of the cancer”. They plan to find a way to prevent the receptors and the hormones from bonding, thus preventing, or slowing the growth.

Studies already show that female sex hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone, are linked to tumor growth. The male hormones were unknown. Patients that have relapsed while on the drug Tamoxifen would benefit with this form of treatment.

If this proves to be successful, there will be many ways to attach breast cancer. The hopes are to significantly reduce the rate of death with this cancer.
